If #4

Here's the new one:

IF you could dispel one spiritual "myth" and the entire world would believe you, what "myth" would you prove to in fact be truth rather than myth?

Can hardly wait for your responses.

Neva

PS. Thank you all for the prayers, my oldest son, Chad leaves for Iraq in about six weeks. Please continue to pray for his wife Traci and their three sons, ages 1, 3, and 5
Thanks

ooo, hard question. There are so many truths that the world calls myths. I like Dan's comment because if we were really convinced there was a hell, we all might endeavor not to go there.

My first response was to say they are not myths--the world just calls them that. But I get where you are going--truths that the world calls fiction and we could prove the world is wrong---good question.
I think I am with Dan and Dean--maybe not just prove there is a hell but prove it is a place of eternal torment. That oughta do it!

Neva,

Kathy meant over night. You didn't think she sat up all night did you?

Paul says, 'All scripture is God-Breathed ...'
2 Timothy 3:16

I would dispell the world's myth that you can do what you want with God's Word. Afterall they think, it is just a book. Jesus was a good man ...

There are evidences related to these so called myths and the real issue is some people just don't want to hear God's voice.

[can anyone finish this sentence?]
There is abundant historical evidence...

I would want the whole world to know that God really does mean what He says--he is not all mercy and lvoe, he is also justice. (as evidenced by the OT)

and by the NT

Acts 3---quote of Deut 18, prophet, whoever doesn’t listen will be “cut off”
Acts 5—Ananias and Sapphira
Acts 12—Herod
1 Corinthians 11:27-32—“fallen asleep”
Revelations 2-3
--The enemies of God will be defeated

He has been a pretty consistent God contrary to popular opinion.

Thanks, Brian,
You know there are some who believe the OT God is a God of Genocide--not just condoning but commanding it. They are difficult to deal with beacuse they believe the OT is all myth. How would you answer them regarding the genocide thing?

tough and good questions

some thoughts;

to answer your question by avoiding it, but it it's not an evasion. We have lost the sense of awe, fear, and majesty of God because we deny those events happened or we say that the God of the NT is different.

People who use that as a reason not to follow God will probably reject the God of the NT who also judges, condemns, and will send those who don't accept Jesus to Hell.

I am for putting our best foot forward and using whatever methods we can but changing the nature of God is very dangerous. Instead of participating in a form of polytheism that says, the god of NT is different, newer, better than the god of the OT, or saying that God changed because of the Cross (where is that taught?)...we need struggle to understand the one true Almight God.

For the Christian who struggles with the violence in the OT (most of us do) consider this
God's love and grace are also evident time and time again in Ot

Lev 10--after Nadab and Abiru die, Aaron and family fail to eat the sacrifices, but are not condemned
2 Chron 30--God makes allowances for those observing the passover,
Read Exodus 34:7f which is repeated inNumb 14:18-19; Nehe 9, and various Psalms. This is how God introduced himself to Moses while revealing His Glory.

Perspective: consider how few and far between the zapping stories are (Uzzah, Nadab Abihu, boy who cursed God, man who gathered wood on Sabbath) An example I give is that even though every death is sad, 18,500 people died on five hours of fighting at Chancelorsville, VA in the Civil War. Every death in Iraq is a tragedy, but there has to be perspective.

And, the other verses I listed show that God is still Holy, Just, Wrathful in NT days.

I think we have to accept who God is and what God did.

re: genocide specifically
OT makes it clear that those people God told to kill were wicked, idol worshippers, sacrificing children, etc. It wasn't abitrary. God chose to punish them while blessing Abraham's descendants at the same time.

that's my sermon, email me if you want to discuss it more.
we definitely must handle it carefully especially when discussing it with non-believers, but trying to change God or hide certain parts of his nature under a rug does not give Him Glory.

Brian, no problem---we are all in the same business, helping each other understand God's word, encouraging each other to walk God's path, and pleading with each other to love God's people.
(How's that for a sermon?) :)

Yvonne, hope my good brother answered your questions. If you have more blog him or me?
Peace,

I think I would prove that God is involved in our lives, He didn't just create us and turn us loose. He created us and watches over us, guiding us etc.

Okay, Yvonne, Brian and Neva and whoever else believes this stuff---what about the innocent children? They were not worshipping idols and sacrificing babies, neither were the animals--and yet god commanded their slaughter and punished Israel when they didnt obey. The two are incongruent and the argument does not hold.

yep, you are right. but we have only a few options

1. claim those parts of the Bible are fictional

2. claim that it happened but God did not command it

3. say that that is the OT god and the new god is more like Jesus

4. reject God totally

5. accept/love God even without understanding him,

side points
1. who said those innocent children were condemned to hell?

2. I preached a funeral recently for a 49 year old who had cerebral and spinal meningitis since age 3, and was physically and mentally handicapped all of her life until dying of cancer.

She will be with the Lord in eternity. the same human perspective that says God is mean and life isn't fair, would say it is too sad she couldn't have a normal life, get married, have kids...but from a spiritual perspective, she won, she had and has the most important thing--eternal life with Jesus.
I would rather my kids have that than a "good and normal life" from an earthly perspective.

btw, I was never intended to explain or answer, just offer more things to consider. maybe there isn't a clear answer. but that is what makes God Holy and a God.

I read this early this morning and have been thinking about it all day--the world seems to look for reasons to disbelieve the truth so I am afraid proving one of their myths true would only help a few. However a few is good so here goes.
I would choose to prove the resurrection. Trey, you know what they say about greatminds.

It probably wouldn't matter--so many of the "myths" have already been proven true and yet society continues to look for ways to discredit God's Word and to lead others away also. I believe God will deal with those people severely.

For interested bystander - One must also see such events in light of the Bible's world view. God created this place perfect and "very good." (Genesis 1) Humans are the one's who brought death into the world through disobedience to God (Genesis 3:1ff; Romans 5:12-14). So if I read the Bible correct, we are the ones responsible for innocent children dying horrible deaths. In spite of what certain religious groups teach the Bible (IMHO) does not teach that God plans everything that happens. I don't know how to explain it all (I'm finite, He's infinite) but the testimony of the Bible has convinced me that God is real and this is His world. So I follow Him though His ways don't always appear to me to be what I would think they should be (Isaiah 55:8).

What Myth? I suppose the myth held by many non-believers that Jesus isn't the Son of God and His life, death and resurrection are a myth, ergo, it is not necessary to accept Him.
That myth dispelled might help many to see Him more clearly and come to not only love, but to obey our Creator.

Neva - You ask such good questions- you must be a mother!!!!

You know - the myth I would most want to dispel is that it takes faith the believe in God but those who don't believe in God don't have faith-- ISTM that it takes more faith to believe in "NO GOD" than it does to believe in "GOD".

I personally don't think it would help people much to "prove the Bible" or "prove that Jesus died" -- Remember what Jesus said about the rich man when he wanted Lazarus to go back from the dead and tell his family to change and avoid torment? When there is already more than ample evidence for our faith - any "proof" beyond the judgement day won't really change things -- but at least if people accepted that everyone has faith in something -- there is no demonstrable proof for any world view --- then we would be able to at least ask "What evidence can you give me that your faith is better than mine?"

God Bless
Charlie
