Neva,
Your blog is one of the best that I visit.
I am strengthened and encouraged by your posts and thoughts.
Keep up the great work!

Hmmmmm. . . what to talk about? I thought maybe I would ask your readers to discuss whether they think the scripture regarding becoming all things to all men so that some might be won---is being used and causing churches to cater to the public and ignore some of the "traditions" of the church?
Might be an interesting discussion among ourselves, haha

Neva -

Miss you posting, but pray that your speaking engagement will go well!

Will keep checking, anyway, while you are gone to see what other commenters have to say and to wait for your return.

Cheers & Blessings to you all today!

Yes it is. That and using Jesus as an excuse to be super passive.

Jarrod et al,
Maybe it is an excuse but maybe there are some traditions that are simply traditions and not biblical and maybe just maybe it is about time we replaced those traditions with a little mercy and love.

Awww...come on, Dean. You aren't going to start that lame "pattern is bad" spiel are you? The apostle Paul says there was a pattern to his teaching and that he taught the same thing everywhere he went. We know that there was a pattern to worship in the New Testament although it was less well defined than the pattern of OT worship, there was a definite pattern. Do you honestly believe that God is okay with us throwing out "HIS" pattern so that we can fill our pews with people who come to be entertained?
Come on---

I thought love and mercy were already traditions of the church.

What kind of traditions are we discussing here? "Traditions" like instrumental music or women's role or maybe the necessity of baptism. Or the three songs and a prayer then a song then a scripture then a sermon then a song and a closing prayer? Exactly which traditions are you referring to, Dean?
Just curious--I like details when I am discussing.

First of all some of those are traditions and others are biblical imperatives, biblical examples and even commands. We really need to differentiate between the two if we are to have an intelligent and informed discussion.

Jarrod,
which ones did you think were biblical imperatives because I would almost bet our list differs. I think there is Greek and historical backing that shows us that instrumental music is indeed a man made tradition and that women are hugely underused in our assemblies. The misogynistic view that churches of Christ have perpetuated as "scripture" is not only unbiblical but also divisive and prohibits many new converts.
Look it up,

Referring back to Dean's comments, I often wonder how the misogynists can apply the parable of the talents to the way women have been treated in the church these past 150+ years? They [misogynists] are, imho, burying women's talents against their will and against Jesus' teachings. We are just as responsible to God for developing those HE has gifted us with as are the men.

Broad brush, but I have long been of the opinion that the way women are enslaved by many church leaders is sinful - well-meaning but sinful nevertheless.

Now I need to go work on that 'quiet gentle spirit' Paul writes about. :)

Neva dear friend,

You will be great, no matter your subject matter and I'm looking forward to your follow-up blog about the talk you're giving this weekend. May our gracious LORD guide you and the Holy Spirit fill you heart and mind with the words He would have you share this weekend, and always!

In the Light of His love, grace and mercy

Hahahaha-
Neva the philogynists have taken over your blog. But I guess that's only fair because of all the "misogynistic" attitudes of the men in the church; although, I sometimes wonder if it is genuine misogyny or just a case of gynophobia?

Oh well, the Pope's already apologized for all Christianity, at least for the Roman Catholic Church's misogynistic attitudes, so I wouldn't even know where to begin to send the reparations checks. But I'm sure they must be in the male. Although I've always seen credit cards as reparations enough.
That and TV reality shows.

Okay, now this is getting interesting! It seems that accusing the church when they are truly being the church as mysogynistic is accusing God of being the same. His rules or pattern are the ones that matter. He always provides women an opportunity to use their talents, but within certain parameters, very similar to the way he established parameters with those with spiritual gifts in I Corinthians. He has certain ways he wants things done. As our creator, he should get to decide how we work best, whether male or female.
And Don, you are one funny ancient wanderer.

I was asked to weigh in on this topic. It is all a waste of time. There is a waste of good talent and the scripture are rested from their context on a regular basis. What a waste of good postage sending compact disks to churches to tell them what is wrong with this that or the other.

My wife is talented. She is not going to take the pulpit she says but can see it if she wants to. All you misogynistic traditionalists wouldn't know true tradition if it bit you. imho

Ok, I'll play along.

Kathy in blue letters.
You seem to be a nice person and are very passionate about your feelings about others- even though you accuse, it seems, 90% of the males in the church of HATING their brethren and are therefore hell bound.

Oh and you still quote the Apostle Paul even though liberal theology has deemed him the most misogynistic of all New Testament writers. That is very, very white of you.

Ok, thank you anonymous @ 7:36 AM. I DO feel better.

And everyone knows I'm just messing with you :)

OR

List one nice thing you plan to do for someone else this week. :)

OK "anonymous" but if this whole plan of your is to end with a group hug then that is impossible.

I have one:
Well not really one. The brethren here say or do something nice for me EVERY TIME I we run into one another. I actually have a lot of nice things done to and for me on a daily basis.

I plan on trying to continue to be nice to anonymous even though I'm sure this "nice" thing hasn't seen its end yet ;)
